As per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, the Center on Thursday proposed draft rules to streamline the process of regulation and registration of vintage cars. The Central Government currently exempts vehicles from participating in vintage car rallies from registration. According to the rule, a vintage car means a 50-year-old car. As per the order, not all vintage motor vehicles can be driven on roads for regular purposes nor will they be used for any commercial purposes. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways prepared a draft order regulating 'vintage motor vehicles'. Order 2019. ' The draft regulations are intended to preserve vintage vehicles for their historical, cultural, technical and aesthetic importance.

There was no formal process or clarity of registration of old vintage cars. This became an issue, especially when conducting vintage car rallies and there were no fixed set procedures for conducting inspection or fitness of cars. We received many requests for regulation and registration of old vintage vehicles. Several federations drew attention to this and were discussed in the 55th meeting of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules- Technical Standing Committee (CMVR-TSC).
