New Delhi: Today, February 22, is the death anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi. When we talk about India's freedom struggle, the names of many women come to our mind, but the woman whose name has become synonymous with freedom is 'Kasturba Gandhi'. Kasturba Gandhi, popularly known as 'Ba', was the wife of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and she contributed significantly to India's independence movement. Despite being illiterate, Kasturba had the wisdom to distinguish between good and bad. She faced evil firmly throughout her life and did not even miss warning Gandhiji on many occasions. According to Mahatma Gandhi, ''Among those who have come in close contact with me and Ba, the majority are those who have many times more faith in Ba than in me.'' She spent her whole life for her husband and country.

For your information, let us tell you that Kasturba Gandhi was born on April 11, 1869, in the Porbandar town of Kathiawar. Kasturba's father 'Gokuldas Makanji' was a simple businessman and Kasturba was his third child. In those days, most people did not educate their daughters and also used to get married them at a young age. Kasturba's father was a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi's father and the two friends decided to turn their friendship into a relationship. Kasturba was illiterate in childhood and at the age of just seven, she was engaged to 6-year-old Mohandas and both of them got married at the young age of thirteen.

If you do not know, let us tell you that Kasturba's initial household life was tough. Her husband Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was unhappy with her illiteracy and used to taunt her. Mohandas did not like Kasturba's getting ready, grooming, and going out of the house at all. He tried to control 'Ba' initially but could not succeed much.
