Dehradun: An orange alert has also been issued by the Meteorological Department in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall in Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh of Uttarakhand today. This is the third time in the current monsoon season that the Met department has issued an orange alert. Rain continues in some cities of the state since morning. Rain and landslides repeatedly disrupted the Badrinath highway on Thursday. The highway at Karnaprayag 4 Lambagad Nala was blocked for some time. The movement of vehicles was smooth when the highway opened. On the other hand, there was a long jam at Kalsi Chakrata due to debris coming in.  

Amidst the same rain, 465 devotees were dispatched to Kedarnath in Sonprayag till 8 am. Light rain continues at Pantnagar in Kumaon and at Chaukhutia. As many as 166 roads have been closed due to landslides triggered by heavy rains in the state. Work is underway to open 45 roads. 182 JCB machines were deployed in this work.

Vikram Singh, director of the Meteorological Centre and senior meteorologist, said that given the possibility of very heavy rainfall, individuals living along the banks of rivers-drains as well as those settled in landslide-prone areas need to be careful. A report in this regard has been sent to the state government and the disaster management department. The MET department has advised the government, the government, district administration as well as officials concerned with disaster management to remain alert for 24 hours in view of the possibility of very heavy rainfall.
