Several rockets hit the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, hurting a lady and a child, according to the Iraqi military. "Several rockets fired from the Doura area in southern Baghdad on Thursday struck innocent civilians in the Green Zone, targeting diplomatic missions that are secured by Iraqi soldiers," the Iraqi Joint Operations Command's media office stated in a statement.

According to the statement, one of the missiles hit a school building inside the zone, hurting a woman and a female kid. Meanwhile, an anonymous Interior Ministry official told media that the air defence weaponry guarding the US embassy opened fire on two rockets, blowing them up before they could reach their intended objectives, while a third rocket fell on a school building, causing damage.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has previously described the attacks on Iraqi military posts as "absurd," emphasising the conclusion of the US-led coalition troops' combat mission in Iraq after their withdrawal.

The current incident was the latest in a string of drone and rocket attacks on the Green Zone and Iraqi army outposts, which house US advisors and agencies.
