Bangalore Surpasses Delhi in Private Cars: A Shift in Urban Dynamics

Bangalore has outpaced Delhi to become the city with the highest number of private cars, according to the latest data from the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2023. As of March 31, 2023, Bangalore boasts an impressive 22.3 lakh private cars, marking a substantial 7.1% surge since March 31, 2021.

Contrastingly, Delhi has witnessed a significant decline in registered private cars, standing at 20.7 lakh units in 2023. This reflects a staggering 38.8% drop since March 31, 2021, signaling a departure from its longstanding position as the leader in private vehicle ownership.

The shift in Delhi's automobile landscape can be attributed to recent policy interventions. The Delhi Transport Department issued a directive mandating the scrapping and re-registration of old vehicles, leading to a reduction in the number of private vehicles. Furthermore, the Supreme Court imposed restrictions on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years to combat air pollution.

The Delhi government's Economic Survey for 2022-23, released in March 2023, sheds light on the evolving scenario. The report states, "During the period of 2021-22, the number of vehicles per thousand population in Delhi dropped from 655 in 2020-21 to 472. This decline is attributed to the scrapping policy for diesel and petrol vehicles."

The total number of motor vehicles on Delhi's roads in 2022 witnessed a sharp decrease, standing at 7.918 million, indicating a 35.38% drop. The Delhi government's proactive measures, including the ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, led to the deregistration of 4.877 million vehicles until 2021-22.

In a related development, Bangalore gained global attention in 2022, securing the title of the second most congested city worldwide, as per the TomTom report. The report highlights that it took an average of 29 minutes and 9 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km in Bangalore city center during 2022.

This shift in the automotive landscape emphasizes the dynamic nature of urban transportation, with cities implementing measures to address congestion and environmental concerns. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
