NEW DELHI: Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangladesh, arrived in New Delhi on Monday on a four-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
On Tuesday, Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have extensive discussions. Following their meeting, the two parties are expected to announce a number of initiatives to strengthen their partnership in the fields of trade, river-water sharing, and defence.
Darshana Jardosh, a minister for the Union, met the prime minister of Bangladesh at the airport. "On her arrival in New Delhi for a State Visit, PM Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh is cordially received by MoS Railways and Textiles @DarshanaJardosh. According to a tweet from Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, "the visit will further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the two countries."
On Thursday, Hasina is scheduled to travel to Ajmer in Rajasthan to visit the Dargah of the revered Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan, Liberation War Minister AKM Mozammel Haq, and PM's economic affairs advisor Mashiur AKM Rahman make up Hasina's delegation.
The Bangladesh prime minister will meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Hasina last went to New Delhi in October of this year.
India and Bangladesh completed the text of their agreement last month about the temporary sharing of water from the Kushiyara river.
On Tuesday, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is expected to be signed. The 38th ministerial meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), which took place in Delhi on August 25, finalised the text of the MoU.
India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers, of which 7 were identified earlier for developing a framework of water-sharing agreements on priority basis. In recent years, there has been an improvement in India and Bangladesh's overall strategic relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh in March of last year to take part in celebrations honouring Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's liberation from British rule.
India also held a number of activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 conflict that resulted in Bangladesh's freedom as a sign of their close connections. Since 2015, the two prime ministers have had 12 meetings.
