New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed a joint press conference in the national capital on Tuesday (September 6, 2022). During this, PM Modi reminded that last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence, the golden jubilee of our diplomatic relations, and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman together. He also reminded that on 6th December last year we also celebrated our first 'Friendship Day' all over the world.

PM Modi said that Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina Ji's visit to India is happening during the Amrit festival of our independence, so he (PM Modi) is confident that India-Bangladesh friendship will touch new heights in the next 25 years of Amrit Kaal. He pointed out that today Bangladesh is India's largest development partner and our largest trading partner in the region. He said that our close cultural and people-to-people ties have also grown steadily. 

PM Modi further said 'We have also decided to increase cooperation in sectors like IT, space and nuclear energy, which are of interest to our younger generations. We will also continue our mutual cooperation for climate change and to preserve our shared heritage like the Sundarbans. The people of Bangladesh will get cheap electricity with the launch of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant. Discussions are also going on between us for power lines so that there is no hindrance to the power supply.'

PM Modi said that there are 54 such rivers that pass through the India-Bangladesh border, and have been linked to the livelihood of the people of both countries for centuries. He said that these rivers, folk stories, and folk songs about them, have also been a witness to our shared cultural heritage. He also mentioned that India-Bangladesh has signed an important agreement on sharing of water from the Kushiyara river, which will benefit southern Assam in India and Sylhet region in Bangladesh.

PM Modi said that today we have also stressed on cooperation against terrorism and fundamentalism. He pointed out that even to keep the spirit of 1971 alive, it is very important that we come together to counter such forces who want to attack our mutual trust. Let us inform you that during this 4-day visit of Sheikh Hasina, many MoUs have also been signed. She has also congratulated for 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' and 'Self-reliant India'.
