Dhaka: Bangladesh is currently experiencing renewed protests following the deaths of approximately 200 people during the anti-quota agitation in the country. On Saturday (August 3), demonstrators took to the major streets of Dhaka, setting up blockades that caused significant traffic disruptions across the city.

In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina convened a meeting with senior teachers, college principals, and the Vice-Chancellors of both public and private universities in Bangladesh. Despite her appeals, student leaders have refused to engage in discussions with the government. On Friday (August 2), Hasina stated, “I am saying again, they (student leaders) can come to me for talks if they want they can bring with them their guardians as well anytime.”

She emphasized, “The door of Ganabhaban is open (for them)…I want to listen to them. I do not want conflict.” However, protestors not only rejected her invitation but also demanded her resignation. The protests have been marked by anti-government slogans and violent clashes with law enforcement authorities. Demonstrators have announced the initiation of a civil disobedience movement starting Sunday (August 4), coordinated by a group known as the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.’

Prominent protestor Nahid Islam stated, “We announce the abolition of the government and the fascist regime. That’s why we call for a student uprising. We want to build a Bangladesh where autocracy will never return. Our sole demand is the resignation of this government, including Sheikh Hasina, and the end of fascism.”

On Friday (August 2), violent clashes resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 150 others. The situation remains tense as the government and protestors continue to be at an impasse, with further developments expected in the coming days.
