Barpeta, Assam: Amidst the hustle and bustle of Eid al-Adha preparations across the nation, the flood-stricken district of Barpeta in Assam is grappling with a worrisome situation. Over 67,000 individuals from 93 villages in Barpeta have fallen victim to the relentless floods.

The inhabitants of the Bhella area, comprising as many as 15 villages in the lower Assam district, are particularly distressed as their hopes of celebrating Eid al-Adha this year have been shattered by the floods. Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Shilla village near the Bhella area, lamented the plight of the affected villages, stating that the flood has had a far-reaching impact. "People are facing myriad challenges. Our Eidgah Maidan has been engulfed by floodwaters, leaving us deeply concerned," voiced Rafiqul Islam.

Echoing the sentiments, Rakibul Islam, another villager affected by the deluge, expressed his sorrow over the impossibility of celebrating Eid. "We must seek refuge elsewhere to commemorate Eid. Our Eidgah is submerged in water, posing a great obstacle," Rakibul Islam revealed.

Gulab Ali shed light on the escalating prices of essential commodities, including vegetables, attributing the surge to the floods. "Many individuals are still residing in relief camps since their homes remain submerged," shared Gulab Ali, highlighting the ongoing predicament. Similarly, Nazrul Bhuyan underscored the myriad challenges faced by the populace, questioning the feasibility of observing Eid. "We are unsure of how we will be able to rejoice in the festivities. The exorbitant prices of vegetables and other essentials have added to our plight," expressed Nazrul Bhuyan.

Najeeb Ali Ahmed, a teacher residing in the Bhella area, emphasized the mounting difficulties encountered by the flood-affected community. "This time, celebrating Eid will prove to be arduous due to the floods. Our concerns are escalating," shared an apprehensive Najeeb Ali Ahmed.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a staggering 225 hectares of cropland in Barpeta district is currently submerged underwater. Tragically, in the past 48 hours, three young lives were claimed by the floodwaters in the district, further compounding the state's death toll to six.

Overall, Barpeta's inundation continues to cast a gloomy shadow over the festive spirit, leaving its residents grappling with unimaginable challenges in their pursuit of celebrating Eid al-Adha.
