New Delhi: The Election Commission (ECI) on Saturday said the voting percentage in several seats in the first phase of assembly elections in Gujarat has increased, but in major districts like Surat, Rajkot, and Jamnagar, the apathy of urban voters towards voting has reduced the overall figure (voting percentage). Similarly, in the assembly elections held in Himachal Pradesh last month, there was no significant enthusiasm among the voters of urban constituencies about voting.
According to the Commission, Shimla Urban assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh recorded the lowest voter turnout of 62.53 percent. This figure is 13 percent less than the average voter turnout of 75.6 percent in the state. The Election Commission said that there was apathy among the people about voting in the cities of Gujarat, which led to a decline in the voting percentage in the first phase.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has appealed to the voters of Gujarat to exercise their right to vote in a big way during the second phase of polling on December 5 to compensate for the low voter turnout in the first phase. According to the Election Commission, Rajiv Kumar said that now the hopes of crossing the voting percentage of the 2017 assembly elections are pinned on the increased participation of voters.
