Brussels: Forty-year-old Paralympian champion Marieke Vervoort, who won the gold medal for Belgium, ended her life yesterday through a death wish on Tuesday. Belgian media has given this information. Euthanasia is legally legal in Belgium. Marieke announced after the 2016 Rio Games that if his condition worsens due to illness, he can follow this path. However, Marieke said at the time that the game gave him a reason to live.

He said in the press conference during the 2016 Paralympics, "I am still enjoying every moment. When this moment comes, when there will be more bad days than good days, then my euthanasia documents are ready, but this time has not come yet. Marieke was suffering from a muscular disease that caused him constant pain, paralyzed his legs and he was barely able to sleep which gradually made his life torture".

Marieke was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 14, after which he made his life in sport and participated in basketball, swimming and triathlon on a wheelchair. Marieke won gold in the 100 meters and silver in the 200 meters at the 2012 London Games, while four years later she managed to win silver in the 400 meters and bronze in the 100 meters at the Rio Games.
