Bengaluru: Heavy rain flooded HBR layout

The overnight rainfall has become a way of exposing poor civic infrastructure, especially in metro cities. After a night-long rainfall, it is common to have drain overflowed and flooded houses. The rainwater, mixed with sewage, entered the apartments of citizens. Roads flooded with water, submerging vehicles and residents mourn, all this is not the first time. A similar case happened when heavy rains thrashed Bengaluru on Tuesday night, many low-lying regions in the city were flooded. The rains flooded the areas of Sahakar Nagar, Horamavu and HBR Layout on Tuesday night.

As per one of the residents of HBR Layout, when heavy rains lashed the low-lying area, rainwater got mixed with the sewage from the stormwater drain and flooded the streets and homes. He further added that corporator Anand came early this morning and organized pumps to flush out the water from our houses. Though the corporator is prompt in taking action after the floods, But the residents asked that when is BBMP going to fix the problem of the storm drains as the people of HBR have been suffering for years now.

The basic reason for the floods were the incompetent efforts on the part of the civic body to clean up the stormwater channels. Another issue is that the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is in charge of sewage connections. In many parts of the Bangalore city, sewage pipes run into storm drains and the BWSSB has not made any effective efforts to rectify the obstacle. With the problem glaring at residents for years on end, every time, even a mild round of rainfall lashes the city, the roads and homes are flooded.
