Real Madrid thrashed Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of the quarter-finals here on Wednesday with Karim Benzema's second consecutive hat-trick in the Champions League football tournament. Benzema has also scored 37 goals in 36 matches in all competitions in the current season. He also created history by scoring a hat-trick in the pre-quarterfinals against Paris Saint-Germain. Benzema has scored 10 of Madrid's last 11 goals.

Benzema scored in the 21st, 24th and 46th minutes. Kai Havertz scored the only goal for Chelsea in the 40th minute. Bayern Munich lost 0-1 to Villarreal in the first leg of another quarter-final played on Wednesday.
