On August 21, 2024, India will witness a Bharat Bandh organized by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti. This nationwide protest is in reaction to a recent Supreme Court decision affecting SC/ST reservations. Here's what you need to know before heading out.
Reason for Bharat Bandh:
The Supreme Court's recent ruling allows states to create sub-categories within SC and ST groups, prioritizing those in greater need of reservations. This decision has sparked controversy among various social and political groups, who believe it challenges the fundamental principles of reservation. The Bharat Bandh is a push to reverse this ruling.
Authorities' Response:
To manage the anticipated unrest, police have heightened their alertness across regions. A high-level video conference with divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officials has been held. Western Uttar Pradesh, in particular, is on high alert. DGP UR Sahoo stated, "We have instructed officials to engage with bandh organizers and market associations to ensure smoother coordination."
Impact of the Bandh:
Organizers have requested that all business establishments remain closed, though it's uncertain whether markets will indeed shut down nationwide as market committees have yet to confirm. While public transport and private offices might experience disruptions, essential services will continue to operate. Government offices, banks, schools, colleges, and petrol pumps will remain open, and critical services such as medical, water, public transport, rail, and electricity will be unaffected.
