Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Monday (April 4, 2022) turned down the anticipatory bail plea of a Surat cleric in a case of conversion of 100 tribals in Kakariya village under Bharuch. Police had filed a complaint against Abdul Variawa and others who had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the high court. According to media reports, the Amod police had registered a case under Section 4 of the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Bill and sections 120(b), 153(b)(c), and 506(2) of the IPC on the complaint of Praveen Vasava.

It may be recalled that on November 15, Abdul Aziz Patel, Yusuf Jiwan Patel, Ayub Barkat Patel and Ibrahim Punabhai Patel of Kakraiya village of Amod taluka of Bharuch district and others had lured 100 people of 35 tribal families into Muslims. According to the information, the accused lured the Hindu tribals of the village with money and in some cases made them Muslims by constructing houses for them.

The accused had converted more than 100 people from 35 tribal Hindu families into Muslims in the village since 2006 and threatened them with dire consequences if they returned to Hinduism. After converting the converted Hindu tribals to Islam, they were also tasked with converting other communities to Islam.
