WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden will take center stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, delivering a keynote speech that marks a pivotal moment in his political career. This address will serve as a symbolic passing of the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, as Biden makes the case against former President Donald Trump and underscores the threat he poses to the nation.

Just a month ago, Biden ended his campaign for re-election following a crisis of confidence within his party and a poor performance in a June debate. Despite this, he is set to receive a warm reception from many of the party members who had previously hoped he would step aside.

Biden's speech is expected to emphasize why he believes Harris should succeed him and continue the fight against Trump, whom he views as a significant threat to democracy. In his address, Biden will also highlight his administration's key achievements before stepping back to let Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, take the lead for the remainder of the week.

During a recent appearance in Maryland with Harris, Biden was met with cheers of "Thank you, Joe!" from the crowd, reflecting a unified party behind Harris. Biden quickly endorsed Harris after ending his campaign, ensuring a smooth transition of his political operation and avoiding internal conflict over the party’s future direction.

Although Biden will no longer be the top candidate, his impact will still be felt at the convention, albeit in a reduced capacity. The convention will recognize Biden's contributions, including his leadership in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and securing major infrastructure, climate, and healthcare investments. Harris has built her policy plans on the foundation of Biden's achievements.

The convention’s branding continues to reflect Biden’s campaign logo, and the United Center will display a quote from Biden’s Oval Office address explaining his decision to step down, urging voters to support Harris: “History is in your hands.”

On Monday, convention signs will feature one of Biden's familiar phrases: “Spread the faith.” First Lady Jill Biden and other family members will be present to witness his speech, which will be a reflective end to his 50-year career in Democratic politics. Harris is scheduled to speak in the prime time slot on Thursday evening, with Biden not expected to be present.
