Mumbai: After losing power in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has now suffered another setback. The Thane Municipal Corporation too has now slipped out of Shiv Sena's hands. In fact, 66 out of 67 Shiv Sena councillors have joined the Eknath Shinde faction. This is being seen as a big blow for the Shiv Sena. It is being said that all the 66 Shiv Sena councillors had met CM Eknath Shinde at his residence. After the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the Thane Municipal Corporation is the second most important and largest corporation in Maharashtra.

Eknath Shinde is believed to have a stronghold in Thane. He also started his career with this. He had won the election of councillor in the Thane Municipal Corporation elections in 1997. He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal House in 2001. Thereafter, in 2002, he became a corporation councillor from Thane for the second time. Eknath Shinde had won the 2004 election from the Thane assembly seat. After this, he won the election from Kopri Pachpakhadi seat in Thane in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

Eknath Shinde had revolted after the results of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. He reached Surat along with rebel Shiv Sena MLAs. From here they reached Guwahati. Here, more rebel MLAs of shiv sena also reached his camp. The Uddhav-led government fell due to the break-up in the Shiv Sena. Subsequently, Eknath Shinde became the Chief Minister of the state with the support of the BJP. At the same time, Devendra Fadnavis is the Deputy Chief Minister. Eknath Shinde has 50 MLAs in his camp. These include Shiv Sena MLAs and Independents.
