Patna: The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar has banned 12 pan masala brands containing magnesium carbonate. The manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation or sale of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate is banned in Bihar.

The Bihar government has said that as per the Indian Constitution, the state government can restrict the consumption of harmful substances to its people to raise nutritional status and standard of living and to improve public health.

In the light of the directive given at a high-level meeting convened by the Chief Secretary on 5th July 2019, the Commissioner of Food Safety has banned Pan Masala of various brands of the state. The ban has been imposed due to the detection of magnesium carbonate in the testing of Pan Masala samples obtained from various districts. It may be mentioned that magnesium carbonate causes a variety of problems including cardiovascular-related diseases.

Magnesium carbonate is a ban as per the standard given in the Food Safety Act, 2006 for Pan Masala. Therefore, keeping in view public health, the ban has been imposed for one year at present. A sample of some other products has been sent for testing, which will also be processed when they are reported. Thus, Bihar has become the second state in the country to ban Pan Masala.
