PATNA: One of the accused in the kidney removal incident in Bihar's Muzaffarpur has been detained, an official said.
The arrested accused, Pawan Kumar Singh, was a member of a surgical team that performed surgery on a woman and removed both of her kidneys. The incident took place in the second week of September of this year at the Subh Kant clinic in Muzaffarpur. The accused doctors claimed that the victim's uterus is infected and needs to be removed after she was admitted to the clinic complaining of abdominal pain.

Family members filled the consent document to have the uterus removed, but doctor R.K. Singh actually removed both kidneys. The sufferer is undergoing dialysis at Muzaffarpur's Sri Krishna Medical College at the moment.

The doctor who performed the surgery escaped from Muzaffarpur after the tragedy. Along with him, Pawan Singh ran away to Delhi and slept at a friend's residence there. He had intended to escape to Bhutan, but first went back to see his family.

A squad lead by Sakra SHO Saroj Kumar raided his home and detained him after the local police received a tip about his coming.

Dr. R.K. Singh and a couple nurses operated on the victim, as per information provided by Pawan Singh during questioning. He explained that after leaving the clinic to pick up his kids from school, he discovered that the surgery had been done but that the woman's health had gotten worse.

"For better care, the physicians have referred her to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). I was sent to PMCH together with the patient and her family members, where I discovered that both kidneys had been removed.
