Ahmedabad: Bilkis Bano has moved the Supreme Court seeking the premature release of all the 11 life convicts in the gang rape and murder case during the 2002 Gujrat riots. In fact, Bilkis Bano has filed a review petition in the apex court. In this petition, a decision of the Supreme Court has been challenged to grant remission of sentence. In fact, the Gujarat government had released 11 convicts and in view of this, Bilkis has demanded that all of them be sent to jail again.

They walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 this year after the Gujarat government allowed the release of 11 convicts under the remission policy. All these convicts spent more than 15 years in jail. On January 21, 2008, a special CBI court in Mumbai sentenced the 11 men to life imprisonment for gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano's family. At the same time, their conviction was upheld by the Bombay High Court. Bilkis Bano was 21 when she was gang-raped and was five months pregnant. Her three-year-old daughter was among those killed.

At the same time, the premature release of the culprits has been opposed by many political parties and human rights organizations besides the victims' families. More than 6,000 citizens, including social, women, and human rights activists, have urged the Supreme Court to set aside the decision to commute the sentence of 11 persons convicted for the gang rape and murder in the Bilkis Bano case.
