Then in 1996, Vikram was selected at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) after which Vikram moved to Dehradun and left his studies. Vikram promised that he would marry his girlfriend after the Kargil war ended. But this did not happen. His girlfriend recalled Vikram saying that "he did not return and gave me memories for a lifetime".

She said that once "I also talked about marrying Vikram because my family was there at that time. But the pressure was on to get married. After which Vikram cut the finger with a blade without any thought and filled my demand. After which I chanted Vikram a lot by saying 'full film'. Today we Laila-Majnu, Heer-Raja, Romeo-Juliet love stories, but Vikram Batra's love story is no less than a Bollywood story.
