GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced the names of 20 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Nagaland. While the saffron party intends to fight the election in alliance with the state's ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, it will contest all seats in neighboring Meghalaya.
"In Nagaland, we will run for 20 of the 60 seats. The remaining seats have been allocated to NDPP, one of our alliance partners. All 60 seats in Meghalaya will be up for election. Our slogan, "M Power Meghalaya," refers to a Modi-powered Meghalaya that would have a double-engine government, the party leaders today.
Elections for the Assembly will take place in both states at the end of February, with results announced on March 2. Elections in Tripura, a state in the northeast, are scheduled to take place on February 17. With the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura, a previous ally, the BJP has endorsed 55 candidates.
The BJP's Central Election Committee met earlier on Wednesday to discuss the impending elections. Party leader JP Nadda presided over the meeting, which also included Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following this, Temjen Imna Along and the Nagaland BJP and Ernest Mawrie of Meghalaya announced party candidates who had been accepted by the party CEC.
