Bangalore: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has decided to bring in the controversial anti-conversion law through an ordinance. In fact, the Bommai government of the BJP has decided to bring an anti-conversion law through an ordinance because the BJP does not have a majority in the upper house of the state legislature.

Bommai said in Bengaluru on Thursday, "Since the assembly session is not going on, we are bringing the anti-conversion bill through an ordinance and it will be introduced in the cabinet meeting." The statement comes at a time when elections to the teachers' and graduates' constituency in Karnataka are scheduled for June 3, which will give the BJP a chance to get a majority in the upper house of the state legislature. It may be recalled that the BJP had succeeded in passing the 'Karnataka Protection of The Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021' in December last year. The Bill is said to have a cascading effect on the very social and cultural fabric of society in the southern state.

Based on similar laws passed in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, the anti-conversion bill in Karnataka was passed in the assembly at a time when attacks against members of the Christian community in the state have increased. Who was openly termed by many BJP MLAs as the main culprit of the conversion racket.
