Guwahati: Assam government minister Hemant Biswa Sarma claimed that the work of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state is still incomplete and there is a need to do "justice" with Hindus living in the Barak Valley region. He alleged that NRC work could not be completed due to former coordinator Prateek Hajela.

Sarma said in a meeting in Barak Valley in Karimganj district that we have promised to provide justice to the Hindus of Barak Valley. The work of the National Citizenship Register (NRC) is still incomplete because of Prateek Hajela. We have done almost 90% work. We need to do some more work to bring justice to Hindus. He said that thousands of people who believe in India are still rotting in detention camps.

The final list of Assam NRC was published in August last year. Out of about 3.3 crore applicants, 19.22 lakh people were excluded from the list. The BJP criticized the list, alleging that it excluded many genuine citizens, especially refugees from Bangladesh before 1971. After the NRC list was released, BJP firebrand MLA Siladitya Dev alleged that the NRC was part of a conspiracy to expel Hindus and help Muslims.
