Kolkata: The BJP's planned visit to Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, by a six-member delegation appointed by party president JP Nadda was abruptly halted by the local police on Friday. The delegation, comprising Annapurna Devi, Pratima Bhowmik, Sunita Duggal, Kavita Patidar, Sangeeta Yadav, and Brij Lal, was accompanied by BJP leader Agnimitra Paul.
Facing obstruction from the police, the delegation raised objections, asserting their right to proceed and meet with the victims. They expressed suspicions that the local police might be complicit in the reported atrocities against women and demanded unhindered access to the affected families, particularly women and daughters, to offer reassurance and support. Union Minister Annapurna Devi criticized the police's failure to promptly apprehend Sheikh Sahjahan, linking it to the ongoing situation. Meanwhile, Union Minister Pratima Bhowmick voiced concerns over the treatment of women in West Bengal, citing the delegation's obstruction as indicative of broader issues in the state.
Allegations were made against the state government, accusing them of pressuring the police to block the delegation's entry. Union Minister Pratima Bhowmick accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of suppressing the visit, labeling her as a "dusht women." BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul accused the state government of fear and suppression, suggesting that their reluctance to permit Union ministers' visits indicated apprehension. Paul claimed that the government sought to suppress reports of alleged atrocities against Hindu women in Sandeshkhali.
The women in Sandeshkhali have been protesting against alleged atrocities committed against them in recent days. In response, the BJP formed a six-member committee of Union Ministers and MPs tasked with visiting Sandeshkhali to investigate the reported incidents of sexual harassment and violence against women. The committee was instructed to visit the incident site, assess the situation, engage with victims, and submit a comprehensive report to BJP national president JP Nadda.
