BANGALORE: A political controversy has erupted over the grant of 10 acres of land by Congress leader DK Shivakumar for a project to build a statue of Jesus Christ on the Kappala Hills in Harobelle village in Karnataka. It is being claimed that it will be the world's tallest statue of Christ. This village comes under Kanakapura Vidhan Sabha. Kanakapura is the constituency of DK Shivakumar of Congress.

According to the report, Shivkumar attended an event here on Christmas day. The work of installing the statue after prayer was duly started. A 114-feet-tall statue was also shown during this period. It has to be made of rock. On this occasion, Shivkumar and his brother DK Suresh handed over the land to the trust run by the local church under whose care the project is to be worked out. DK Suresh is also an MP from here.

However, the ruling BJP has strongly criticized Shivakumar's move. Senior BJP leader and minister in the state government, KS Eshwarappa, said in a tweet that the Congress had opposed the construction of Ram temple, but is now supporting the construction of the idol of Jesus Christ. Eshwarappa said on the question of journalists asked about his tweet at Mangaluru airport that if it is being done with everyone's consent then it is welcome but Shivakumar's step is for Christian vote.
