Tamil Nadu government denies permission to BJP for ‘Vetri Vel Yatra’

Chennai: The Palaniswami government of Tamil Nadu has refused permission to organize the 'Vel Yatra'  of the ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, even after this, the BJP is adamant to organize the yatra. The president of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit says that I want to pray to Lord Miruga, this is my constitutional right.

Advocate General Vijay Narayan has informed the Madras High Court on Thursday about this. The yatra was to begin today from the Tiruttani temple in the north of Tamil Nadu, which would end at the Tiruchendur temple in the southern part. Great preparations were made for the 'Vel Yatra' by the BJP, while opposition parties were opposing it. Two PILs were filed in the Madras High Court against the BJP's Vail Yatra. One of the petitioners had argued that the yatra could spoil the communal harmony, as it would end on 6 December, the day the Babri Masjid demolition took place.

Tamil Nadu BJP President L Murugan, who led the yatra, approached DGP JK Tripathi on 15 October to seek permission. The DGP asked the party to approach the SP and police commissioners of the respective districts for permission and issued a directive to give consent to consider the local circumstances.
