NEW DELHI: Prior to the general election, the opposition parties continues to be at the receiving end as shown by the Presidential election, which was tilted to one side. The result is being studied by the BJP since in over 12 states opposition MLAs and MPs voted for Droupadi Murmu.

As per  sources, almost 100 MLAs cross-voted and more than a dozen opposition MPs supported Droupadi Murmu, the President-elect. According to the data, the Congress-led opposition received 20 votes despite having 45 votes in the Assam Assembly, and in Bihar, six MLAs cross-voted in favour of the NDA candidate despite the ruling party's strength being 127 but receiving 133 votes. Similarly, two Congress MLAs in Chhattisgarh did not vote for Yashwant Sinha. It was unclear, however, who MLAs supported the NDA candidate.

According to BJP sources, they would analyse the pattern of how many MLAs were impressed with the Prime Minister's development policies before making a decision. However, party officials argue that a one-sided victory was quite predictable. The main setback came from Gujarat, when 10 MLAs supported Droupadi Murmu. The state goes to the polls this year, and the Congress has a lot riding on the results.

In Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress has accused the government of bribing MLAs, 15 to 16 of the party's MLAs cross-voted, causing Kamal Nath serious headaches.

Murmu received votes from more than a dozen non-NDA MLAs in Maharashtra. To the chagrin of the BJP, she also won votes in Kerala, where there is no BJP MLA. A total of 4,754 votes were cast in the Presidential election, which concluded on Thursday with the announcement of the results.
