Ahmedabad: Counting of votes in 6 metropolitan municipal elections in Gujarat continues. A total of 576 seats in 6 metropolitan municipalities (Manpas) were voted on 21 February. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has got a majority in all 6 Manpas i.e. Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar. BJP has won 401 and Congress 50 seats.

This time the Congress is losing more than the 2015 elections in Surat. There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that the Patidar Reservation Committee (PASS) had opposed the Congress. The second reason is that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gave tickets to the Patidar candidate and campaigned keeping this area in the centre. That is why AAP has surpassed Congress here. The BJP also did roadshows in the Patidar areas, but even then it did not seem to meet its target of winning all 120 seats. In the previous Surat, BJP won 80 out of 120 seats and Congress 36 seats.

The tenure of these six municipal corporations, except Gandhinagar and Junagadh, was completed only in December last year, but due to Corona, elections could not be held. For this reason the Corporation Government was dissolved. The Municipal Commissioner was running the corporation.
