RAIPUR: Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi today said she was glad that her innings could conclude with the party's mass outreach programme 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' while describing the march as "a turning point" for the party. In Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh, the 85th Congress party plenary session got underway on Friday.

Sonia Gandhi said, "Our victories in 2004 and 2009 along with the capable leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh gave me personal satisfaction but what gratifies me most is that my innings could conclude with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a turning point for Congress," in her address to the crowd on the second day of Congress' three-day brainstorming session here. The former head of the Congress Party charged that the BJP, in power at the federal level, was undermining all national institutions.

"Congress and the nation face difficulties at this time. Each and every institution in the nation has been taken over and undermined by the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It brutally muzzles any oppositional voices. By favouring a few businessmen, it has brought about economic destruction "In the controversy around Hindenburg's report on the Adani group, the Rae Bareli MP added in a covert assault on the Centre. Significantly, the 4,080 mile Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi travelled through 12 states and two union territories in 145 days after its commencement on September 7 of last year.

A meeting at the Srinagar headquarters of the Congress and a large demonstration on January 30 marked the yatra's conclusion.  Congress claimed, the Bharat Jodo Yatra was the longest foot march by a politician in Indian history. The party claimed that it was supported by numerous political parties and nonprofit groups across the nation.

The Yatra was considered as an effort to motivate the party's rank and file for the approaching electoral battles after Congress suffered a disaster in the assembly elections held last year. On Saturday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, also spoke at the meeting.

Addressing the plenary session of the party, Kharge said, "We will tackle whatever obstacle the nation presents. For the country, the Bharat Jodo Yatra was like sunshine. Many people joined Rahul Gandhi in showing their support for the Congress. Rahul motivated youngsters." "BJP organised a raid on party workers' homes to end this Plenary Session. They detained our employees. Nonetheless, we dealt with them and had this meeting "said the head of Congress.

Priyanka Gandhi, the general secretary of the Congress party, reached Raipur earlier on Saturday to take part in the 85th party plenary session. Priyanka Gandhi was welcomed by Bhupesh Baghel, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, at the airport. To welcome Priyanka Gandhi, the general secretary of the Congress party, and other officials to Raipur on Saturday for the 85th plenary session, Congress members spread flower petals on the roadway.

In view of the challenges faced by the party, the Congress Steering Committee decided to nominate individuals to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Friday morning. There have been rumours that Congress may choose to hold elections for the CWC, a demand that has occasionally been made by different party factions. The CWC is the Congress's highest decision-making body.

Jairam Ramesh, the leader of the Congress, stated that 16 articles and 32 rules are suggested to be altered, and an important adjustment was to offer 50% reservation in the working committee for minorities, young people under 50, SCs, STs, and OBCs. The party will probably change the constitution to give former prime ministers and party bosses permanent membership in the CWC.
