The Madras High Court witnessed a unique moment in judicial history. This was not about any Judgment but about the swearing of judges. For the first time in the Madras High Court, a husband and wife became a judge and interestingly, both took oath on the same day. This is the second time in the history of Judicature.
Justice Murali Shankar Kuppuraju and Justice Tamilselvi T Valayapalayam took the oath of Judge in Madras High Court on Thursday (3 December). During this time, Advocate General Vijay Narayan said that Justice Murali Shankar married Justice Tamilselvi. This is the first time in the history of Madras High Court that husband and wife have sworn in the same day as the judge. By doing this, he has created judicial history. At present, in addition to the couple, 8 other judges were sworn in at the Madras High Court.
The two married in 1996 when Justice Murali Shankar was serving as Principal District and Sessions Judge in Tiruchi and his wife Justice Tamilselvi was appointed as Registrar (Judicial) in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. However, this is not the first time that a husband and wife become judges together in the High Court. Advocate General Vijay Narayan told that earlier in November 2019, Justice Vivek Puri and Justice Archana Puri took oath on the same day in Punjab and Haryana High Court and both were also spouses.
