The distribution of millions of Chinese Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines in Brazil has been stopped because the factory where they were manufactured is not approved by the Latin American country's health authorities. ANVISA, a Brazilian government regulatory authority, stated on Saturday that it had "decided the precautionary interdiction of batches of CoronaVac vaccine, banning the distribution and use in the plant of batches not permitted by the Authorization for Emergency Use (AUE)."

The ban was issued after 12.13 million CoronaVac doses were shipped in 25 batches. Another 17 batches of the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine, a total of 9 million doses, are being prepared for shipping. The dosages were notified to Anvisa on Friday by Brazil's Butantan Institute, a biomedical center that has collaborated with China's Sinovac

Biotech finishes the vaccinations locally, but neither divulged the location of the factory. During the 90-day embargo, Anvisa stated it will try to investigate the factory. Butantan said 9 million more doses made at the same plant were on their way to Brazil. Several cities in Brazil have begun providing vaccine booster shots even though most citizens have yet to receive their second jabs.
