New Delhi: Brazil has expressed its desire to import wheat, rice, millet, and sorghum from India. This information was given in the official release issued after the meeting of the agriculture ministers of the two countries. According to the statement, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar discussed various bilateral trade and other issues in a meeting with Brazilian Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply Minister Tereza Christine Correa da Costa Dias.

The two Ministers acknowledged that agriculture is a priority area for India and Brazil and have pledged to increase cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. Dias has said that both countries have the same challenge. Majority of the population is related to agriculture and most of them are small and marginal farmers. Their income is low and there is no market penetration. Also, access to new technology and innovation is very less.

During the meeting, he said that removing barriers will strengthen the trade and business relations of the two countries. The statement quoted the Brazilian Agriculture Minister as saying that wheat, rice, millet, and sorghum are some of the products that India would like to export to Brazil. Tomar, who also holds the responsibility of the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, has said that bilateral trade between the two countries is $ 1.045 billion and is far below capacity.
