A power earthquake of 5.2 magnitude on the Ritcher scale hit Afghanistan, said the National Center for Seismology.

This recent earthquake adds to the series of tremors that have shaken the nation in recent times.

In a tragic occurrence back in October, a formidable earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit western Afghanistan, causing widespread devastation. The aftermath, characterized by powerful aftershocks, resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives, according to the country's national disaster authority as cited by the Associated Press. The toll was severe, with more than 2,000 fatalities and over 9,000 individuals sustaining injuries. These were among the deadliest tremors to have struck the mountainous region known for its susceptibility to earthquakes in recent memory.

The United States Geological Survey pinpointed the epicenter of the 6.3 magnitude quake to be 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Herat, the largest city in the affected region. Subsequently, three substantial aftershocks followed, registering magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5, accompanied by additional smaller tremors. Prior to these significant seismic events, the Geological Survey had also recorded eight aftershocks with magnitudes ranging between 4.3 and 6.3.

The recurrence of seismic activities in Afghanistan underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the country in mitigating the impact of natural disasters, particularly earthquakes, and highlights the urgent need for enhanced preparedness and response measures to safeguard lives and infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
