UNITED NATIONS: The BRICS countreis, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa expressed concern over the rise in and persistence of conflicts around the world and reaffirmed their commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences and disputes through dialogue. They backed all initiatives aimed at a "peaceful settlement" of the situation in Ukraine.

Carlos Alberto Franco Franca, the foreign minister of Brazil, met with Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, S. Jaishankar, Wang Yi, the foreign minister of China, and Naledi Pandor, the minister of international relations and cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, on Thursday. The gathering took place in conjunction with the high-level UN General Assembly session.

The ministers "committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States, stressed their commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation, and supported all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine," according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs. 

The Ministers "raised concern on the growing and ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world," according to a news release issued following the meeting, which was presided over by South Africa in its capacity as the incoming BRICS Chair for 2023. They emphasised the necessity of upholding the fundamental standards of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence established as well as the strict adherence to international humanitarian law. In the statement, it was stated that they "recalled their national stances regarding the situation in Ukraine as voiced in the appropriate fora, notably the UNSC and UNGA."

The trajectory of the Ukraine crisis is a source of grave concern for the whole international community, Jaishankar stated earlier in the day at a UN Security Council meeting. "The prospect for the future is much more unsettling. Particularly unsettling is the nuclear problem. Jaishankar told the UN Security Council that it is urgent to put a stop to the violence in Ukraine and resume communication and diplomacy, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remark to Russian President Vladimir Putin that this cannot be a time of war.

The BRICS Ministers emphasised their commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation and supported all initiatives conducive to the peaceful settlement of crises. The BRICS Ministers stressed their commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States.

They reaffirmed their commitment to joint initiatives for the peaceful resolution of conflicts through political and diplomatic channels and acknowledged the UNSC's role as the principal institution in charge of preserving world peace and security. They emphasised the necessity of abstaining from any coercive actions that are not supported by international law and the UN Charter once more.
The Ministers discussed intra-BRICS initiatives as well as significant global and regional concerns on the United Nations' agenda in the political, security, economic, financial, and sustainable development domains.
At the 77th United Nations General Assembly, they spoke about the potential for mutual support of their projects. They voiced support for the BRICS nations' sustained collaboration in areas of shared interest, including regular interactions between their Permanent Missions to the UN.

The UN's "central role in an international system where sovereign states cooperate to maintain peace and security," the advancement of sustainable development, and the promotion and protection of democracy, human rights, and fundamental freedoms for all were all emphasised by the Ministers as they reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism through upholding international law, including the goals and principles enshrined in the UN Charter as its indispensable cornerstone.

The Ministers reaffirmed their dedication to bolstering and reforming the multilateral system, particularly the UN and its main organs, in order to make the institutions and tools of global governance more inclusive, representative, participatory, revitalised, and democratic as well as to facilitate greater and more meaningful participation of developing and least developed countries, particularly in Africa, in international decision-making processes and structures.

The Ministers emphasized the need for the global governance system to be inclusive and effective as well as the G20's significance in this regard as a leading multilateral forum for economic cooperation that brings together significant developed and developing nations on an equal footing for their mutual benefit. They firmly believed that the G20 should carry on operating in a fruitful manner, concentrating on the production of tangible results, and making decisions by consensus.

They expressed their appreciation for the current Indonesian Presidency's skillful management of this platform and pledged to make a positive contribution to the success of the future G20 Bali Summit, which will take place on November 15–16, 2022. They demanded that the means necessary to carry out the 2030 Agenda be mobilised in order to implement it in its three dimensions -- conomic, social, and environmental -- in a manner that is balanced and integrated.
