Importance of Buddha Purnima - In Hinduism, Buddha Purnima has special significance. Lord Buddha was born on the full moon day of Vaishakh month. It is said that Mahatma Buddha is considered to be the ninth incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu, the creator of the universe. This full moon is also known as Siddha Vinayak Purnima or Satya Vinayak Purnima. On the day of Vaishakh Purnima, Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under the Peepal tree in Bodh Gaya and not only that on the full moon day, Buddha left for Mahanirvana in Kushinagar, 50 km from Gorakhpur. Apart from Hindus, people of Buddhism celebrate this day as Buddha Jayanti.

- It is believed that Lord Vishnu was born on the full moon of Vaishakh as his ninth avatar.
- It is believed that Sudama Vaishakha, a childhood friend of Lord Krishna, visited him on the full moon day. Meanwhile, when the two friends sat together, Krishna told Sudama the law of Satyavinayak fast. Sudama duly observed this fast and his poverty was destroyed.
- It is believed that Dharmaraja is also worshiped on this day, because Dharmaraj is happy with Satyavinayak fast. It is believed that Dharmaraja is the god of death, so his happiness reduces the fear of premature death.
