On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the keynote address on the occasion of ''Virtual Vesak Global Celebrations'' on Wednesday, Prime Minister's Office said.

The event is being organized by the culture ministry in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and will witness the participation of all the supreme heads of the Buddhist Sanghas from around the world. Over 50 most prominent Buddhist religious leaders from around the world will address the congregation.

Buddha Purnima, in the month of Vaishakha, is an extremely auspicious day.  According to Buddhist traditions, Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Gautama Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. at Lumbini in the Terai region of Nepal. Lumbini is now a popular place of pilgrimage and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exact date of Lord Buddha's birth is not known.  Lord Buddha's birth is celebrated as part of Vesak, a festival that also marks the day of Buddha's enlightenment.
