The benchmark indices started the day higher as Prime Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered her fourth consecutive Budget address today. The Sensex climbed 658 points to 58,672 points, while the Nifty gained 190 points to 17,529 points. Positive global cues contributed to today's positive mood on Dalal Street.
The top Sensex gainers were ICICI Bank, Infosys, Maruti, and HDFC, with gains of up to 1.91 percent. The only Sensex losers were PowerGrid and ITC, which both fell 0.39 percent. Today, the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies increased to Rs 266.98 lakh crore.
On the BSE, market breadth was positive, with 1,912 shares advancing and 795 falling. 68 of the shares remained unchanged.
The number of stocks that made 52-week highs was 106, while the number of stocks that fell to 52-week lows was 6. In early trade, India volatile index, the stock market's volatility indicator, decreased 0.91 percent to 21.75.
On Monday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 3,624 crore on January 31, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 3,648 crore
