A tragic incident struck the city of George in South Africa as a multi-storey building collapsed, resulting in the loss of at least five lives and leaving many trapped under the debris. The collapse occurred early on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from rescuers who are tirelessly searching for survivors.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the causes behind the collapse. The aim is not only to bring closure to the affected community but also to prevent such disasters from happening again in the future.

According to authorities in George, twenty-six construction workers were rescued from the site of the collapsed building, but a concerning 49 individuals are still unaccounted for. The municipality disclosed that three separate teams are currently engaged in rescue operations across different sections of the site.

Drone footage of the scene reveals the diligent efforts of rescue workers as they meticulously clear away debris in hopes of reaching those who are still trapped. Colin Deiner, chief of disaster management for the Western Cape province, informed reporters that rescue efforts are concentrated on areas where sounds of potential survivors have been detected.
