Damascus: At least 11 people, including three children, died when a building collapsed in Syria's northern city of Aleppo on Wednesday( September 7). According to media reports, an illegally constructed five-storey building in Firdaws, the southern part of Aleppo, collapsed on Wednesday evening. Seven women, three children and an elderly man died. Aleppo is Syria's largest city and was once its commercial capital.
The report also said that two people were injured. At the same time, on receiving information about the incident, the force reached the spot and evacuated 7 nearby buildings. Rescue operations are still underway amid the debris. It is being told that more people may be buried under the debris. Media reports quoted Aleppo City Council chief Muid Madlaji as saying that the building was built illegally and its basis was weak. He said the area had suffered a lot during the war. Due to this, it suddenly fell down. During this time many people were present in the building.
Until December 2016, Firdaws was a rebel-held area. With the help of Russia and Iran, government forces took control of the eastern parts of the city. Several buildings in Aleppo were completely destroyed or damaged during Syria's 11-year war conflict, which also killed hundreds of people.
