Patna: The Bihar Legislative Assembly passed the Bihar Municipality (Amendment) Bill, 2022 on Thursday. In this, it has been made mandatory for civic bodies to give prior notice to encroachers before carrying out demolition operations on public land. The bill was introduced by Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, who also holds the portfolio of Urban Development. The Bill was passed in the House amidst uproar by the opposition members regarding the Saran hooch tragedy.
According to the bill, civic officials can remove temporary encroachments after 24 hours of issuing the notice and permanent encroachments only after 15 day notice period. Yadav said that the state government was coming out with a rehabilitation policy to provide alternative accommodation to the slum dwellers whose houses were demolished during the recent anti-encroachment drive.
The concerned officers are already surveying the affected people. He said that according to a preliminary survey, the government is preparing to rehabilitate 48,000 affected slum dwellers whose houses were demolished in the recent operations in Patna. The assembly also passed the Bihar Technical Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2022. After the passage of the Bills, the proceedings of the House were adjourned for the day. As soon as the proceedings of the House began, the BJP MLAs started raising slogans against CM Nitish Kumar over the Saran spurious liquor case, in which 26 people died after drinking spurious liquor.
