MUMBAI: A survey released on Tuesday revealed that around 45 data centres totaling 13 million square feet and 1,015 MW of IT capacity are expected to be built in India by 2025, spurred on by the rising demand.

By the end of 2025, there will be 183 data centres in the nation with a combined 24 million square feet and 1,752 MW of total IT capacity.  In terms of IT capacity (almost 1,015 MW), over 69 percent of total proposed new supply will come up in Mumbai and Chennai, with 51 percent in Mumbai alone.

138 data centres totaling 11 million square feet and 737 MW of IT capacity are currently located throughout India (building ready).  Mumbai and Chennai together account for at least 57% of the existing IT capacity.

"India's data centre market is currently worth about  $5.6 billion and is only expected to expand. As of FY 2025, the nation's total anticipated demand for data centres is anticipated to reach 2,100 MW, with a mix of hyperscalers and businesses "said Devi Shankar, president of ANAROCK Capital's industrial, logistics, and data centres.

The report said, India has the potential for an extra 2,688 MW of future unexpected supply."Land for this supply has been secured by DC operators, but the projects will probably be planned based on actual demand and/or results of earlier scheduled phases."it siad.

The majority of this unplanned IT capacity, ie. about 78%, will be based in Mumbai and Hyderabad.
"Data centres are currently a fulcrum for a lot of the decision-making, particularly in Asia Pacific and in India," said Jeff Binwanger, Managing Partner, Binswanger.

While 30% of businesses are considering hybrid hosting services (Cloud + data centre) for data management, 72% of professionals have seen data surges in their organisations after COVID-19.
