New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) revealed today that the bypoll for the Rajya Sabha seat left vacant due to the unfortunate demise of BJP MP Hardwar Dubey is scheduled to take place on the 15th of September. Hardwar Dubey passed away on the 26th of June. His tenure as a member of the Rajya Sabha was originally slated to conclude in November 2026.

Following the established protocol, the counting of votes will commence an hour after the closure of polling at 4 pm on the 15th of September, as outlined in the EC's timetable.

At present, the state of Uttar Pradesh is represented by 31 Rajya Sabha MPs, of which 25 belong to the BJP, three are from the Samajwadi Party, one each from the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party, with an additional Independent member.

The members are elected for a span of six years, with a third of them retiring every biennial cycle. The party's allocation of seats is contingent on the number of seats it holds during the nomination phase. A nominated member from the party stands for election. The electoral process within state legislatures employs the single transferable vote system, ensuring proportional representation.

Tragically, Hardwar Dubey, a prominent member of the BJP, breathed his last on June 26. It's noteworthy that his tenure as a Rajya Sabha representative was originally slated to conclude in November 2026.
