Guwahati: The dates for the Assam assembly elections have been announced and West Bengal may be the most discussed in this election, but the state adjoining it is no less important. It will be a big challenge for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to save this stronghold in Assam. The BJP wants to save this fort in the North East as Assam, but the Congress, which is trying to return to power, has made the political battle interesting by aligning with the Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF.

In Assam this time, the issue of giving land rights to illegal migrants and natives is likely to prevail in addition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Citizenship Register (NRC). During the elections in Assam, voice is also being raised against CAA. This is why Congress has made CAA its main agenda. It was passed by the Narendra Modi government of the Center in December 2019. In this law, arrangements have been made to give citizenship of India to refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. There is a provision for granting citizenship only to the refugees of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, and Zoroastrianism of these countries. Muslims were not included in this.

The issue of NRC along with CAA is also expected to be a part of the election. However, amidst the controversies, the Election Commission has said that people whose names are not on the NRC list will also be able to vote. BJP is not happy with this but Congress and AIDUF are happy with this decision.
