New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday (November 10)  approved the restoration and continuation of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told a press conference after a Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the scheme has been restored for the remainder of the financial year 2021-2022 and will continue until 2025-2026.

The scheme's goal is to allow MPs to recommend developmental projects that focus on the creation of long-term community assets in areas such as drinking water, primary education, public health, sanitation, and roads. The total cost of restoring and maintaining the MPLADS until 2025-26 is estimated to be Rs 17417 crore. Thakur stated that funds will be released in one instalment at a rate of Rs 2 crore per MP for the remaining period of 2021-22. According to Thakur, funds will be released under the scheme at a rate of Rs 5 crore per year to each MP in two instalments of Rs 2.5 crore each from 2022-23 to 2025-26.
