Tesla Inc's California vehicle factory workers are deemed essential. Tesla and local California officials in March involved in a heated argument months-long over restrictions imposed to restrain the first wave of infections. The company's chief executive, Elon Musk culminated in challenging health orders, suing local officials, and threatening to leave the state.

A curfew has been imposed by California's governor on social gatherings and other non-essential activities. Beginning on Saturday, the stay-at-home order prohibits a non-essential business from 10 pm until 5 am each day and applies in the majority of the state's counties. The California Department of Public Health in a statement said it did not apply to employees deemed essential workers, with manufacturing listed as an essential workforce. Under California law, local provinces can impose more prohibitive measures than mandated by the state. The county's health department made a statement saying it was following state guidelines but may act to restrict activities beyond the state's requirements.

When the initial virus outbreaks happened in March, local officials ordered Tesla to halt production, and Tesla's factory remained shut down for roughly six weeks. Billionaire Musk in early May defied county orders by reopening the factory, telling county officials he stood ready for arrest.
