According to a group of researchers, an Ayurvedic poly-herbal drug that has the potential to both slow the progression of chronic kidney disease and restore normalcy in the functional parameters of the important organ can be used to treat patients with ascites, a condition in which fluid gathers in spaces within the abdomen.

Assistant Professor Komala A, Siddesh Aradhyamath, and researcher Mallinath IT from JSS Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital in Karnataka provided a variety of Ayurvedic formulations along with AIMIL Pharmaceutical's innovation Neeri KFT for impaired kidneys in a study that was recently published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medical Sciences.

The researchers stated the treatment involved daily administration of 20 cc of this ayurvedic formulation in the morning and evening for a month, adding that the results were encouraging.

The herbal medication helped patients in excreting the fluid that had accumulated in their abdomens as well as protected their kidneys from additional harm caused by their disease.  The researchers said, drinking herbal formulation caused the urinary tract to evacuate fluid from the abdomen.

Known for their diuretic qualities, herbs like Punarnava, Varun, Sigru, Sariva, Makoi, and Sirish are included in the NEERI-KFT, a herbal medicine made from plants.

According to Sanchit Sharma of AIMIL Pharmaceuticals, Neeri KFT has demonstrated effectiveness in recent years in strengthening the kidney and removing toxic fluids from the body.
