MELBOURNE. The Jos Buttler-led England team's thoughtfulness in waiting for teammates Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid to move aside before popping the champagne cork in honour of their ICC T20 World Cup victory against Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday has been praised on social media.
At the storied Melbourne Cricket Ground, England won the T20 World Cup for the second time after defeating Babar Azam's Pakistan by five wickets with one over remaining. All-rounder Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten 49-ball 52 as England quickly reached their victory mark of 138.
The team opened the champagne bottle as is customary, but not before asking Moeen and Rashid to move to the side. Many people have praised the two cricket players for treating their religious beliefs with the appropriate respect.
Jos Buttler, the England captain, honoured the trust of his teammates by first taking team photos before informing the two players that the champagne celebrations were about to begin and that they should move aside.
A fan tweeted, "Respect for religious diversity is a vital component of any civilised society," after the video went viral. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali were asked to leave by England's captain Jos Buttler before they could toast with champagne.
Pat Cummins, Australia's Test captain and pace bowler, made a similar gesture toward Usman Khawaja after their Ashes victory earlier this year at home, as he stopped others from popping the champagne and invited Khawaja onto the platform to finish the celebrations.
