A notorious Android banking Trojan designed to steal user data, such as passwords and text messages, has been discovered in Google Play and downloaded thousands of times. The Tbit banking Trojan, also known as Anatsa and Toddler, has also been first seen targeting European banks in May 2021 by stealing a two-factor authentication code sent by text message. Recent reports say  that malware has evolved to include distribution through second-stage malicious payloads,  and users are now being targeted in Russia, Hong Kong and the United States.

This is what's happening with the app: According to media reports, it's cleary's talk about that while the malware has already been distributed through SMS-based phishing camps using several common apps such as TTV, VLC Media Player and shipping apps like DHL and UPS, its researchers say that the malicious Google Play app was working. A "dropper" for giving a tbot through fake in-app updates. Droppers are apps that look legitimate, but actually provide a second-stage malicious payload.

The hunt being created like this: The app, "QR code and barcode - scanner," has succeeded in pulling more than 10,000 downloads by the time it was discovered, after being deleted. But because the app offers the promised functionality, almost all of the app's reviews are positive. Although the app looks legitimate, it immediately requests permission to download a second application, "QR Code Scanner: Add-on", including several Tbot samples.

Once installed, TBot seeks approval to view and control the device's screen to receive sensitive information such as login credentials, SMS messages, and two-factor codes. It is also misusing Android's accessibility service, similar to other malicious Android apps, to request permissions that allow malware to record keyboard entries.
