A tragic accident occurred early this morning in Lithuania when a DHL cargo plane crashed into a house near Vilnius Airport, resulting in at least one fatality.
The crash, which took place around 5:30 a.m. local time (3:30 a.m. UK time), caused significant damage to a two-storey home. One person was confirmed dead, while another was rushed to the hospital.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was operated by Swiftair, a Madrid-based contractor, and was traveling from Leipzig, Germany, when it lost control. According to the Lithuanian airport authority, the plane had made a turn to the north of the airport and was preparing to land when it crashed about a mile short of the runway.
Emergency services, including fire trucks, police, and ambulances, quickly responded to the scene. Nearby streets were closed off as a precaution. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Weather conditions at the time included freezing temperatures, cloudy skies, and winds of about 30 km/h (18 mph).
The Boeing 737, which was 31 years old, is considered an older model, but this is common for cargo flights. The aircraft was operated by Swiftair, but the carrier has not yet commented on the incident. DHL, based in Bonn, Germany, also did not immediately respond to requests for further information.
